GENERIC CAST No. 2

To celebrate 100 likes over on our Facebook page, we’ve done a new mix! It’s chock-full of classic Garage and House joints you’ll (probably) know and love, alongside newer cuts by Mosca, Dem 2 and Eliphino. Oh, and some Lil B thrown in for good measure. Tracklist after the cut.

Raw Passion by Clicks & Whistles

Clicks & Whistles are another one of a host of US based producers making innovative Bass music to emerge in the past few years. Their Neva Get Caught / Raw Passion EP dropped on T & A Records earlier this month, and includes the two OG’s and a host of remixes. It was this track that really caught our eye though, with its perfectly placed vocal sample and 90s synth - two things that hook us in almost every time. Big ups.

Love Like This (B + S Edit) by Faith Evans

Here’s some smooth, slow House to accompany that fine Ifan Dafydd tune. Behling & Simpson, other than being part of the Futureboogie fam and from Bristol, seem to have a relatively low profile. What we can say though is their edit of this Faith Evans’ timeless jam, which they’ve filtered through some sultry percussion and synth stabs, is an absolute banger. Thankfully, the vocals are spared from any chops, making for a lovely soundtrack for your Sunday morning/afternoon comedown. Chuck this on and thank us later.

Miranda by Ifan Dafydd

Ifan Dafydd seems set to be the next hype artist - it just seems inevitable, as are the comparisons to James Blake (his former housemate). Either way, ‘Miranda’ is a lovely track and has us eagerly anticipating what Dafydd will drop next. Will he follow Mr. Blake and try his own take on autotune-heavy-post-Dubstep? Whatever he does, we’re willing to bet that 2012 will be a big year for him. Watch this space.

My Neck, My Back (Tom Flynn Remix) by Khia

Most of y’all will probably remember the OG of this tune - it’s difficult not to. Tom Flynn throws in a nice Techy 4/4 beat and in doing so creates an instant dance floor filler. With Saturday night approaching the world over, what better tune to give a spin? DJ’s take note - this one is guaranteed to get people moving.

Loving You Like Crazy (Todd Terry Mix) Corina

Loving You Like Crazy (Todd Terry Mix) by Corina

Todd Terry straddles lines between Deep and Diva House. He blends Rave, Disco, Chicago and Hip-hop influences into a cohesive whole. Think masterful basslines and tasteful synth stabs. Welcome back to 1990. Make sure to don your hypercolour jacket and harem pants.

Mirage (Girl Unit Remix) by Nguzunguzu

It’s the second Generic People club night tonight, and we’re in a bit of a party mood,  This bangin’ Girl Unit remix isn’t exactly new, but it does pretty much sum up how we’re feeling at the moment. So, sit back, and let the bass kick.

You Deliver by Hackman

Hackman is definitely one of our favourite producers. Yes - we know we say that a lot, but in our defense it’s a pretty big list. We spoke to him a few months back about his impending LP release, which judging by the quality of this track is going to be something pretty special. ‘You Deliver’ is beautifully lush, and will no doubt be on repeat in the GP office for a while to come. Best of all though, it’s free, so nab your copy over at XLR8R.

Lung Rot by Vlsonn

This futuristic banger was aptly labeled “crackstep” by someone on soundcloud. We don’t know a huge amount about Vlsonn, other than he resides in Toronto, and has a penchant for remixes. However, if he continues to release tunes as good as this, we’re sure it’s a name we’ll be hearing a lot more of in 2012. Get to know.

Analogue Tour by T. Williams

London based T. Williams is yet another producer from the English capital gaining accolades of late. Mr. Williams has had a solid 2011, which has included official remixes for Maya Jane Coles and Skream. He also runs the stellar Deep Teknologi label, which is well worth checking out for those unfamiliar with it. ‘Analogue Tour’ starts with nostalgic Synth, before evolving into a spacey, bass heavy jam. In fact, it’s so good that it’s even helping ease our mid-week blues!

Mercury by Tom Flynn

If you dig Tech-House, Tom Flynn is no doubt a name you probably know well. After a momentous 2010, Flynn has continued to impress in 2011, which has included a release on Dirtybird. ‘Mercury’ came out late last year, and is over eight minutes of jerky Tech-House goodness. A-side ‘Jupiter’ is equally good, and are both highly recommended inclusions to any good DJ’s repertoire.

It’s House by Chip E

Before the week ends, we’re going to take it back to 1985. The GP crew have had a bit of a retrospective obsession with House’s roots throughout the past week, with this particular track being given more than a few spins. Chip E has become a somewhat-elusive figure these days, though his Jack Trax EP still stands the test of time, much like everything else on DJ International and Trax. What more needs to be said about this classic? Just let Mr. Eberhart take you in…

Deuces (Nguzunguzu Remix) by Ciara

So you may have heard this track already - it’s been floating online for nearly a year after all. Nguzunguzu are the masters of remixing R&B tracks and turning them into absolute club bangers, and this track is no exception. Start your Saturday night right, listen to this.

You Lift Me Up (Catz N Dogz Remix) by Mercury

The Swiss duo Mercury have been around for a little over a year with only two releases in total, yet like the West Norwood Cassette Library, they’ve been blessed with some pretty big remixes from Tom Trago and the Round Table Knights along the way. Their still-fresh Sweetness EP kind of steps it up a notch with the soulful factor, but the bosses behind Catz n Dogz outdo the OG of this track, with swinging synth stabs and cut-up vocal snatches. It’s a perfect kick-starter for the weekend and definitely a jam worth cutting rugs to.

But Life Goes On Nahmean by Hype Williams

It’s no doubt fairly obvious we’re big fans of Hype Williams, with the duo constantly challenging us with their output. They seem incapable of sticking to one genre, or record label for that matter, and are as enigmatic as they are talented. Inga Copeland sings in what we (think) is Russian on this Track, accompanied by their usual Lo-fi 80s-esque instrumentals. If you’re not a fan of Hype Williams as musicians, you have to admit they manage to come up with some pretty unique track names.

Clear by Jack Dixon

It seems like Mr. Dixon can’t stop giving away free tracks of late, not of course that we’re complaining. ‘Clear’ is a bubbling House number, differing from the future Garage vibes we’ve come to expect from him. Not to worry though - he’s just as adept with the 4/4 side of things. Enjoy

Video Games (Joy Orbison Remix) by Lana Del Ray

At a a first listen, there is not a lot to separate this track from the glut of other female vocal led Tech House mediocrity. But something about this feels off kilter and sinister, a la The Knife. Throw in some gorgeous synth work by Joy Orbison, with its slow build, and you’ve got a track that feels as at home in a mainstream club night as it does in your headphones. Get on it.

On and On (Look Like Remix) by Erykah Badu

We’ve been Look Like fans for a while, but he’s really one-upped himself with this one. Remixing someone like Ms. Badu is always slightly risky, after all it is pretty difficult to make her songs any better than they already are. Our boy from Switzerland has done exactly that however, and we’ve got a feeling this tune’s going to be on repeat for a while.
